Hip fractures are not commonly associated with dislocations because of the strong joint capsule. The anterior and posterior columns are connected to the axial skeleton through the sciatic buttress. The acetabulum is formed by the anterior and posterior columns and connected by the supra-acetabular region. The femoral head and the acetabulum form the hip joint. The anterior ligaments are the first to disrupt.įigure 5.1 (a)–(d) Normal pelvic and hip anatomy: 1, sacrum 2, sacro-iliac joint 3, ilium 4, iliac crest 5, anterior superior iliac spine 6, anterior inferior iliac spine 7, ischial spine 8, obturator foramen 9, superior pubic ramus 10, inferior pubic ramus 11, ischial tuberosity 12, symphysis pubis 13, femoral head 14, fovea centralis 15, posterior acetabular rim 16, acetabulum 17, neck of femur 18, inter-trochanteric line 19, greater trochanter 20, lesser trochanter 21, Kohler’s tear drop 22, Shenton’s line. The anterior group in contrast is weak and prevents distraction and anteroposterior displacement. The posterior group is strong and complex and attaches the spine to the pelvis. The ligaments are the anterior and posterior sacroiliac ligaments, the sacrotuberous ligament, sacrospinous ligaments and the ligaments of the symphysis pubis. The integrity of this pelvic bony ring can be compromised by disruption of these ligaments ( Figures 5.1 and 5.2). It comprises three separate bones (the sacrum and two iliac/innominate bones) which are held together by a series of strong ligaments. The pelvis is the connection between lower limb and trunk and hence it is inherently unstable. The fractures may be subtle on plain radiographs and may be overlooked in particular in obese and elderly osteopenic patients. In contrast, hip fractures may occur after relatively minor trauma in elderly patients and are suspected from the clinical history and examination. The mortality rate for closed pelvic fractures is 27% and that for open fractures is 55%. Prognosis is poor if the injuries are not detected and treated promptly. This results from internal visceral injuries (commonly bladder and urethra and rarely uterus, cervix, vagina and rectum) and bleeding due to high impact in RTAs, falls in young patients and associated underlying co-morbidities in elderly population. There is high morbidity and mortality associated with pelvic fractures. Pelvic and hip fractures are seen in the elderly population with trivial trauma whilst the mechanism in young patients generally involves high-impact injuries including road traffic accidents (RTAs). ![]()

But how to “emblematize” or decode the emblems of nature is precisely what poets such as Whitman and Dickinson work out in distinctive ways. The importance of emblematic framing harkens back to Emerson’s Nature, the foundation of American Transcendentalism. Any concrete sensation is, for a Dickinson lyric, highly emblematic of an internal state. Rather than cataloguing an epic list of variegated sites, a la Whitman, Dickinson lyrical poetry often interweaves intense emotion, abstract concepts, and just a smattering of concretion curated for effect. The poem above, #458, is typical of Dickinson’s landscape. Whereas Whitman’s poetry flows forth in an almost libidinal outpouring, overcoming limitations through a spiritual and erotic embrace of all things, Dickinson’s poetry almost seems to contract the world into a deeply private subject/speaker. As a contemporary, Walt Whitman often represents the counterpart to Dickinson. One way to think about Dickinson’s poetry is in relation to other mid 19th-century American lyricists, especially those belonging to the Transcendentalist movement. ![]() Dashes = Stronger than a comma, weaker than a period perhaps expresses the movement of thought. ![]() Poem #465: “I heard a fly buzz” poem ends with a dash lines are very iambic, alternating between tetrameter (four feet) and trimeter (three feet) plays with slant rhyme, but ends with strong rhyme that helps with closure. For Dickinson, white was the color of passion and intensity the soul burned white hot.Considered an eccentric in Amherst, known for only wearing white outside the home.1858-1865: wrote 800 poems, but rarely left her room.Dickinson imagines “seeing” as a form of power, playing with the homonym “I” and “eye”.“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy I have come that they may have life and have it to the full. The following video offers a helpful introduction to reading Emily Dickinson. Jesus has promised us this good life that no one can steal from us if we choose to hand our life over to him ![]() Our dash can become an example to our family and others of how life can be lived abundantly. We can choose to live our lives totally absorbed in pleasing ourselves, ignoring the love and guidance of our Heavenly Father, or we can give value to our lives by listening to the words of wisdom in his Word and following in the footsteps of Jesus. Now we, as followers of Jesus Christ, have the same choice. For the Lord is your life and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” (Deuteronomy 30: 19 – 20) Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. “This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before your life and death, blessings and curses. When Moses was speaking to the children of Israel, he pointed out that if they wanted to live life to the fullest they had the choice of ignoring God or holding fast to him. Our aim is not how much we have accumulated in wealth, but how much love we have given to others and to help others in their dash. The poem points out that we all don’t want to come to the end of that dash with regrets and unhealed relationships. “Show me, O Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days let me know how fleeting is my life.” (Psalm 39: 5) We often don’t realise how time can pass so quickly and how we sometimes squander the precious moments given to us in useless pursuits The Psalmists were aware of and knew it was important to value the life given to us. The poem points out that the dash between birth and death is the life lived! How that dash is lived is really who the person is and how that dash is fulfilled is the most important information. Too often when we read the funeral announcement in the media, or we are studying a grave stone, we see the dates when the person was born a dash and then the dates the person died. The title itself is intriguing and I didn’t grasp the significance of it until my friend explained what it meant. Just recently a dear friend attended a funeral of one of her friend’s husband and was very touched by a relative reading the poem “The Dash Poem” – Linda Ellis. “You have made known to me the path of life you will fill me with joy in your presence with eternal pleasures in your right hand” ![]() ![]() ![]() WMA has evolved since its inception in 1999, with several updated versions: WMA Pro, WMA Lossless, and WMA Voice.
